The Korea Football Association(KFA) announed that a South Korean legendary striker Hwang Sun-Hong has been appointed as head coach ot the under-23 men's national football team on a 1+2 year contract which is until the end of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. but KFA and Hwang agreed that he will be subject to have mid-term performance review after the end of the 2023 Asian Games in China.

The KFA held a new head coach's press conference at the KFA house in Seoul on September 16, 2021. 

"My goal is to win the trophy at the Asian Games. I know it's not easy. But if we prepare well, there will be a chance to win a gold themedal."

"Also I believe we have a lot of promising players with great potential in this age group."

"I want to do well in the Asian Games next year and prepare for the Olympics in Paris afterwards"

The 53-year-old is one of the greatest football legend in South Korea. He played for the South Korean national team from 1988 to 2002 and scored 50 goals in 103 matchs. He represented his country at four consecutive FIFA World Cups, starting in 1990.

At the professional level, he had a lot of experience on the European and Asian stages. In Germany, he played for Wuppertaler SV and Bayer Leverkusen II, and in Japan, he played for Cerezo Osaka and Kashiwa Reysol. In South Korea, he played for Pohang Steelers, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, and Jeonnnam Dragons and retired in 2002.

In his post-playing career, Hwang started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Jeonnam Dragons in 2003. and He first became a head coach in 2003 with Busan IPark. Then he has managed Pohang Steelers, FC Seoul and the most recently he managed Daejeon Citizen in the second-division K-League2(2nd division) in 2013.

Hwang's first test will come in next month. Young-Tigers will play in the qualification tournament for the 2022 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Asian Cup. and will face Singapore, Timor-Leste and Philippines. South Korea won the tournament in 2020.
